'Machine gun' sighting prompts four arrests

Police released this CCTV picture of a man apparently trying to fire an automatic weapon outside Woody's Bar in Sandys.

This is the moment that a hooded man attempted to open fire with a suspected automatic weapon outside a busy Sandys bar.Police released CCTV footage of the alleged gunman at Woody's yesterday in a bid to bring him to justice.Four Pembroke men were in custody over what Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro described as a “gang-related” crime [see second story here].And National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief praised the “early cooperation of witnesses and the proprietors of the establishment” in aiding the investigation.“The destructive gang lifestyle, when manifested in this way, must be met with strong enforcement, and a community united in deploring the act,” he said. The gunman did not manage to fire the weapon, and no one was hurt in the incident just after 10pm on Saturday at the popular drive-through on Boaz Island. There were an estimated 20 to 30 patrons outside the bar at the time.Following the release of the bar's security images, Mr Perinchief urged anyone with information to come forward.Echoing the appeal for witnesses, Det Ch Insp Pedro said: “We are taking the unusual step of releasing CCTV footage of the incident in the hope that we can identify the man and the type of weapon.”He explained: “Members of the public reported to the police, following a 911 call, that a masked man had emerged from the side of Woody's, and produced what they initially described as a 'machine gun'.“The masked man appeared to be attempting to discharge the weapon, however no shots were discharged.“A full police investigation was immediately commenced, and the premises were attended by on-duty police officers.”Speaking of the CCTV photo from Woody's released to the media he said: “You will note that the suspect is dressed head to toe in a blue rain suit including a hood, white — possibly latex — gloves, and a red scarf covering his face.“Investigations have further led us to believe that the suspect(s) left the Spanish Point area on a jet ski and travelled across the Great Sound to Grey's Bridge and travelled through this bridge near to Boaz Island where we believe they left the jet ski to carry out this act. The jet ski is then believed to have returned using the same route to Spanish Point.”Det Ch Insp Pedro said “a robust intelligence-led investigation” led police to seize a jet ski from Pontoons or Stoves Bay, near Spanish Point Boat Club.“The results of the tests conducted are due to be received in due course. Officers have also arrested four men — all from Pembroke — on suspicion of possessing a firearm in relation to this incident; however no firearm has yet been recovered,” he said.He added: “As you will note from the footage, the type of weapon cannot be clearly identified.“However, the footage is being sent overseas for digital enhancement and analysis to determine the identity of the suspect and the weapon type — if this is possible.”He noted: “It is concerning because, if the images and the suggestion is true that the suspect in this matter was in possession of a weapon capable of automatic fire on a crowd of innocent people, then this incident could have resulted in multiple casualties.”He urged anyone who can help solve the crime to contact the police, saying: “To the patrons of Woody's Bar if you saw something, say something. To the friends or relatives of the man in this photo if you know something, say something.”Police did not put out a statement about the incident until Monday evening, in response to inquiries from this newspaper. When we asked what type of firearm was used, they declined to comment.Asked why it took until yesterday morning to reveal details of the crime and issue a CCTV picture, Det Ch Insp Pedro replied: “You appreciate that with this type of incident we don't automatically go public with everything that we're doing.“It kind of defeats what we're doing, so we try and time things. But I can assure you the investigation has been conducted expeditiously and commenced right from the outset.”Anyone with information should call the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477, the Serious Crime Unit on 247-1739 or any police station on 295-0011.
