Taxi driver, 78, to face drink-drive charges after Front Street crash

A 78-year-old taxi driver will face charges of driving while impaired after his taxi collided with a parked cargo trailer in the capital shortly after noon yesterday.Police were dispatched to the scene — the junction of Front Street and Fagan’s Alley — at around 1pm. He was arrested after failing an alco-analyser test.The incident left the taxi with “extensive front end damage,” according to Police, and traffic was temporarily diverted for vehicles heading out of the City on Front Street.The driver, a Southampton resident, was not injured.“Inquiries into this collision are ongoing and a court appearance for the taxi driver is anticipated in due course,” police said in a statement.
