Gunman admits to home invasion

A man admitted committing a serious sexual assault at gunpoint during a house burglary.Raymond Kidd, 20, also pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm as he stole cash, electronic equipment, jewellery and cell phones in the raid at the home in Hamilton Parish, on March 19.Kidd, of Harlem Heights Road, Hamilton Parish, further admitted assault with intent to rob while using a gun.His accomplice Olice Morgan, 30, of Rambling Lane, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to handling a firearm and handling stolen goods as part of the same incident.A third defendant, Triston Burgess, 19, of Random Lane West, Warwick, admitted breaking into the home and stealing the goods with a firearm, as well as taking two motorcycles without consent and possessing a firearm. The matter had been expected to go trial in the coming weeks after the trio pleaded not guilty to a succession of charges at a previous hearing. However, at a brief hearing scheduled for mention in Supreme Court yesterday, they each changed their pleas on a number of the counts to guilty.Kidd maintained his not guilty plea on two counts of taking motorcycles without consent, and possessing a firearm; Morgan continues to deny aggravated burglary with a firearm; Burgess still pleads not guilty to assault with intent to rob and using a firearm with intent to assault to rob.Director of Public Prosecutions Rory Field said he was happy to proceed with sentencing on the matters the defendants admit, with the other charges to remain on file.Mr Field did not volunteer specific details of the case, telling the court he would wait until the sentencing hearing.Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves adjourned the matter for sentencing on a date to be fixed at next month’s arraignments session.Mr Greaves accepted a request from Kidd’s lawyer, Marc Daniels, that a social inquiry report be carried out before the next appearance. All three defendants, who stood quietly in the dock throughout the session, were remanded back into custody.Reacting to the news, a police spokesman said: “The Bermuda Police Service take this opportunity to thank all members of the community who provided assistance in this matter and look forward to your continued support in the future as we strive in realising our mission of ‘Making Bermuda Safer’.”
