Disappointing response to witness appeal following shooting

A memorial honouring Michael Phillips has been placed at the entrance to Loyal Hill Road on North Shore. Mr Phillips was shot dead outside the Mid-Atlantic Boat Club on Sunday.

by Owain Johnston-BarnesPolice are disappointed by the lack of witnesses coming forward to help in the hunt for the killer of Michael Phillips.Officers say there were around 30 people at the Mid-Atlantic Boat Club on Sunday night when the 42-year-old father was fatally shot.According to police, Mr Phillips was sitting on his motorcycle around 9.35pm when he was shot multiple times by one of two gunmen outside the club. The second gunman reportedly entered the Devonshire club itself and fired several shots.Acting Detective Chief Inspector Calvin Smith said yesterday: “To date the response from the public has not been as good as we would have hoped.“We are aware that approximately 30 persons were in the establishment at the time. While many of those persons might believe that there is not much they can offer, I want to assure them that the smallest piece of information can assist with this investigation.”He continued: “As the investigative team works to progress all possible lines of enquiry including forensic evidence collected at the scene, members of the public who can assist in bringing these dangerous offenders to justice are once again urged to come forward to do their part in making Bermuda safer.”Anyone with information about Mr Phillips’ murder or illegal firearms, should contact the Serious Crime Unit on 247-1739 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.
