Quiet neighbourhood shocked by gunshots
Residents in a quiet Smith’s neighbourhood spoke yesterday of their horror at being awakened late at night by a volley of gunshots.According to a neighbour, a man was fired upon by an unknown gunman shortly before 11pm on Monday, but escaped without injury.A bullet was yesterday found embedded in the front door of an apartment on Peet Point Lane, and surrounding walls were left pocked with bullet marks.“I don’t think anybody in this neighbourhood got any sleep,” said one area resident who was awakened by the gunfire.Police were called to the neighbourhood around 10.55pm and kept guard on the targeted address through the next morning. The upper-level apartment involved in the shooting sits within the well-kept residential area just off Verdmont Road. One or more gunmen waiting outside an adjoining residence are believed to have shot through a fence at a man as he stood in the driveway.According to a resident, the shots appeared to be directed at that individual, who took shelter behind a car. Those details could not be verified by police.“I’ve never heard of it around here,” the resident said, adding that they hadn’t understood what the shots were when they rang out.At the upper level apartment where shots gouged the door and outside walls, residents said they were unhurt, but declined to comment.About a dozen forensics chalk circles dotted the stairs and driveway below.MP for the district Trevor Moniz called Smith’s West “a stable area”.“Having said that, nobody can be certain where a shooting will occur,” the One Bermuda Alliance MP said. “That constituency, constituency nine, includes Border Crescent, which is nearby, and where Jahmiko LeShore was shot dead [on March 1, 2011].“Obviously it’s of great concern. Most of these incidents appear to be gang- and drug- related. In these times of serious recession it seems all to be a matter of turf and territory for the people who do these things. We wish they would stop this murderous behaviour, not just for the victims but for innocent bystanders.”The incident is now under police investigation.A spokesman said it was usual policy in cases of late-night gunfire for officers to remain until daybreak, to ensure forensics gathered all evidence.Officers are appealing for witnesses, or anyone who may have seen persons acting suspiciously in the area of Verdmont Road and Peet Point Lane, to telephone 295-0011 or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline, 800-8477.
