Westgate inmate in hospital after stabbing
The Minister responsible for the Island’s prisons has launched a full-scale investigation following the stabbing of an inmate at Westgate Correctional Facility. In a statement released to this newspaper late last night, Attorney General, Sen Kim Wilson said the incident yesterday was “terribly regrettable”.But she “thanked the hard working members of the Corrections Department for their swift action in getting control of the situation”.At last check, the inmate, who reportedly sustained a stab wound to the chest, underwent surgery at King Edward VII Memorial. At 10pm last night he was listed in stable condition on a general ward.Inside sources confirmed the inmate was leaving an anger management class when he was stabbed reportedly by another inmate. This newspaper also understands the inmate was reportedly stabbed with a shank, that penetrated the flesh of his upper arm and punctured his chest. There was no official word on whether the weapon was seized or whether the assailant was nabbed for the assault behind bars.Prison sources confirmed also that the maximum security prison was placed on lockdown after the incident.Sen Wilson said hours later: “I can assure the public that a full investigation is underway and until I am in receipt of fuller details of the matter I will limit my comment on the incident. And in particular response to media reports regarding concerns about alleged overcrowding at the facility, the Attorney General said: “There are several factors that are carefully taken into consideration when placing inmates in housing units.“Factors such as risk, Case Plan compliance, sentence, and available spaces in different units.“Our goal continues to be the close monitoring of where inmates are housed and the risks they pose. We keep a current list of those known to have gang affiliations and use this information in managing where they are housed.“Those who are deemed Low Risk are housed at the Farm. Obviously, inmates who are at Westgate have not yet progressed to the Low Risk category, however as noted, we maintain a vigilant watch over all inmates housed and the risks they pose.”Commissioner of Prisons Edward Lamb is currently out of office until October 31.Efforts to get a comment from the second-in-command at Prison headquarters were unsuccessful. The news comes in the same week that convicted killer Antoine Anderson was sentenced to an additional seven years in prison for a brutal attack on a fellow inmate. In response to the Anderson case earlier this week, The Royal Gazette asked Commissioner of Prisons Edward Lamb how often attacks take place in the prison system. He replied: “As to your question about the number of inmate-on-inmate assaults at Westgate, I am pleased to say that the number of these incidents is very low.“In fact, in relative terms, it is much lower than many other jurisdictions. This is a testament to the strength of our regimes and the management of inmates.”
