Cannonier: Christmas Day shooting evidence of national tragedy

Twenty-year-old Malcolm Augustus was shot dead near Anchorage Lane, St George's.

Malcom Augustus' shooting on Christmas Day shows that Bermuda is "in the grip of a national tragedy", Premier Craig Cannonier stated today. He insisted that such acts will only end with a "profound community effort".Mr Augustus, 20, was shot on St George's Golf Course shortly after midnight on December 25.Mr Cannonier visited Mr Augustus' family with National Security Minister Michael Dunkley later that day.Said the Premier in release issued this afternoon: "Our thoughts and prayers are with young Malcolm's family at this time. The circumstances surrounding his tragic and untimely passing have shocked and saddened all of Bermuda. I urge all Bermuda to remember this family in our prayers and do all we can to bring this community together.“The Government regards such acts with extreme concern and will move with urgency to follow through on its commitment to put in place programmes to stop the shootings. We simply cannot continue to have young men getting shot to death. The shootings destroy families, weaken communities and violate the very spirit and promise of Bermuda. The Christmas Day shooting reminds us we are in the grip of a national tragedy that will require a profound community effort to end.”The killing underscores the importance of having the community work together to end violence, Mr Dunkley said."The Government will lead this initiative with support of targeted enforcement by the Police and urgent implementation of a working Ceasefire model that turns our young people away from destructive lifestyles.”He urged anyone with information to help the police in their investigation into the crime.“Like the Premier, I ask everyone to remember this grieving family in their thoughts and prayers. They will need our support.”Officers are interested in speaking with anyone who saw a black motorcycle bearing the registration number BU411 near Wellington Back Road between 10.30pm and 10.45pm on Tuesday or saw anything unusual in that area at that time.A Progressive Labour Party spokesman issued the following statement this evening: "The Progressive Labour Party is saddened by the shooting death on Christmas morning of young Mr Malcolm Augustus. It is our fervent hope that those involved in this crime are brought to justice."We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr Augustus during this difficult time."Police responded to reports of shots near Anchorage Lane around 12.05am.Said a Police spokesman: "On arrival officers met the 20-year-old victim, who was on the golf course, and who appeared to have been shot. He was conveyed to the King Edward Memorial VII Hospital, where a doctor later pronounced him dead."A full investigation into this incident is underway, being led by Detective Inspector Dave Greenidge. A complement of detectives from the Serious Crime Unit, and our Forensic Support Unit have examined the scene to collect evidence, and witnesses have been sought, and interviewed. There are a number of lines of enquiry being carried out by the investigating team."Mr Augustus lived in St George's.
