Vandals struck a Somerset Church on Christmas Eve, uprooting a row of hibiscus recently planted to beautify the area.Elizabeth Card, a parishioner at St Joseph’s Church, said she discovered the damage on Christmas morning as she was picking up items left at the church the previous evening.“I was coming from the direction of Wreck Road and when I took a look I saw that all 33 plants had been uprooted and tossed into the street,” Mrs Card said.“I was angry. I couldn’t figure out why someone would be so spiteful and why it had happened. We had left the church at around 9pm on Christmas Eve, and the police said they noticed it at around 7am, so it happened sometime between that.Fellow parishioner Joanne Judd said the plants had been put on the property by Works and Engineering just weeks before in an effort to enhance the area.“The church had been trying to beautify the area, and they had actually given up some of their property so that a sidewalk could be put in to help pedestrians get around,” she said.“I was shocked. I couldn’t believe that someone go and damage property when the community is making a huge effort to enhance the area. How do you react when something like that happens, and at Christmas no less?”All but one of the plants were recovered and returned to their place by the end of the day.Asked if she had a message for the culprit, Mrs Card said: “We have to pray for people like that. I’m sure that they didn’t get any satisfaction out of it.”
