PACE guidelines updated
Fresh guidelines for police on cautioning or charging people over certain offences have been issued by the Director of Public Prosecutions.DPP Rory Field issued guidelines three years ago for the new policing under Section 36 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act of 2006.According to the Department of Public Prosecutions, while the legislation is “not yet in force in Bermuda”, the guidelines have been issued in anticipation of “a time in the near future when section 36 will be operable”.The rules assist police in determining the aggravating or mitigating factors that come into play with offences ranging from common assault and criminal damage, to misuse of telephones and disorderly public conduct. The new guidelines have replaced the old set of rules, the DPP said, and both are now published on the Department website.Useful website: www.dpp.gov.bm.
