Homeless burglar caught in the act

A Good Samaritan stopped a homeless burglar from making off with jewellery from a property in Pembroke on Valentine’s Day.Jason Liburd was spotted stealing several necklaces, two sterling silver pendants and a belt buckle, valued at $559.He was caught in the act by Walter Bell, who was on his way to visit the property’s tenant, Roseanne Edwards.Mr Bell held Liburd at the Angle Street building until officers came. The 42-year-old, who has a history of burglary convictions, was yesterday jailed for a year after he confessed to the crime.Crown counsel Susan Mulligan told Magistrates’ Court Mr Bell noticed the lock on the gate to a workshop on the property had been removed. He then saw a green bag on the ground and heard a noise coming from inside the workshop.Liburd tried to get away by climbing out of a window but Mr Bell held on to him until police arrived, Ms Mulligan said. The items stolen were found in his possession at the Hamilton Police Station. The crime was committed while he was on probation for a similar offence.“Nothing has gotten through to him despite the jail terms he has had over the years; his last conviction was on September 11, last year,” she said.“He was stopped on the scene and held with the stuff stolen in his hands.”The defendant told the court that he knew he was wrong for stealing. He said he ran into the workshop to hide from two people who looked at him “hard”.“When I got inside I saw things that I like and so I took them,” he said.“I know the woman who lives there and I’m wrong for taking her property but I’ve been going to my meetings at Focus and Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute, and I apologise.”Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said: “You know there’s a price to pay when you do these things right?”The defendant replied: “Yes.”Duty counsel Susan Moore-Williams noted that the defendant “needs treatment for core issues”, and then suggested a social inquiry report.Mr Tokunbo shook his head and told the defendant: “The two things in your favour is you were accosted, the property has been recovered and your guilty plea.”He sentenced Liburd to one year in prison with time already spent in custody taken into consideration.
