Prosecution drops extradition attempt against murder suspect
Attempts by prosecutors to have a murder suspect extradited from the UK back to Bermuda have been thwarted.Patrick Stamp, 28, from St George’s, was wanted by police in connection with the shooting of Malcolm Augustus in the early hours of December 25 last year.Mr Stamp was eventually tracked down in the UK and arrested. He was remanded into custody and was scheduled to face an extradition hearing next month to bring him back to the Island. But an official at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London has now confirmed that Mr Stamp was released on May 22 after extradition proceedings against him were dropped.Attorney Garrett Byrne of the Department of Public Prosecutions could not be contacted yesterday to explain why the extradition process had failed.Another St George’s man is currently in custody on the Island awaiting trial. Wolda Gardner, 33, has denied the murder.
