Police report ‘tense’ scene after football match
Police are investigating a possibly gang-fuelled disturbance at the St David’s Cricket Club last night at the close of a football game.
A man said to have come from Somerset Cricket Club was struck in the head shortly after 5pm when a group of cars came onto the grounds of the St David’s club just after the end of the match.
According to a police spokesman, details were “sketchy” — but a motorcade of about 20 cars from the West End club came into the pitch.
“Upon the motorcade’s arrival at the grounds, it appears that a male threw a projectile, hitting a member of the motorcade in the head,” the spokesman said.
The suspect then made good his escape.
Police said there was no disruption of the match — adding that the attack did not reflect on either club, but was due to “individuals with pre-existing tensions”.
However the incident created “a very tense situation in the area”.
A “large police response resulted and there were no further incidents”, the spokesman said.
“The man hit in his head received injuries but refused any police intervention.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 295-0011. Inquiries are ongoing.
