A 39-year-old man arrested in connection with the armed bank robbery in St George’s has been released on police bail.

The suspect was detained after a gun-wielding robber targeted the Butterfield Bank at just after midday on Tuesday and made off with an unknown quantity of cash.

Yesterday, Premier Michael Dunkley joined St George’s MP Kenneth Bascome and Michael Collins, the senior vice-president of Butterfield Bank, in visiting the branch to express support for the management and staff.

Mr Dunkley commended the employees for their strength, professionalism and resolve during yesterday’s armed robbery and he also praised the Bermuda Police Service for their swift action in the aftermath of the incident.

“I thought it was important to come down and show support specifically for those members of staff who were very disturbed by the incident.

“No one expects this kind of thing to happen ever in their life. They still have some wounds that have to heal and we are trying to help them along that road.”

The robbery was caught on the bank’s CCTV system and footage shows the man entering the bank, vault the counter and confront three members of staff.

He then points what appears to be a firearm that he is holding in his right hand at staff, making further demands for cash.

After securing the cash the man, who was also wearing white gloves, jumped back over the counter and fled the bank.

Police are still appealing for witnesses or anyone with any information should contact police on 295-0011.
