Residents were warned to beware of telephone and internet scams after a reported incident this afternoon.

Police said they were advised of calls that appeared to be from a telephone number in Chad which disconnected after two rings.

Phoning back the number connected the caller to an automated message, which was apparently intended to keep the person on the line for as long as possible at a premium rate.

A police spokesman added: “Residents that receive similar calls from an unknown overseas telephone number are strongly advised to ignore the calls.”

The Bermuda Police Service reminded residents to “remain vigilant regarding phone calls, e-mails and other correspondence from unknown persons that attempt to obtain money, personal information and other sensitive data”.

Any incidents of suspected telephone or internet fraud should be reported to the Financial Crime Unit on 247-1757 or by e-mailing fraud2@bps.bm.
