Belco warning over fake billing scam

Online scam: Con artists are sending e-mails that claim to be from power firm Belco (Photograph supplied)

Con artists have sent out e-mails claiming to be from electricity company Belco in a bid to obtain financial information, the firm warned today.

A spokesman for the company said that several spam e-mails had been reported in the last 24 hours and that police had launched an investigation.

The spokesman added: “Customers should not open the e-mail or click on any links or attachments.

The e-mails were sent from a One Communications address and contain fake billing information.

The spokesman said: “BELCO bills that are e-mailed to customers will be sent from ebilladmin@belco.bm, whereas the spam e-mails are being sent from certain One Communications user e-mails.

“BELCO will never request passwords or personal information via e-mail. If ever in doubt, please do not reply to the email in question.”

He added anyone suspicious about a communication that claimed to be from the firm should e-mail info@belco.bm or call 295-5111.
