A 33-year-old man was in critical condition in hospital tonight after the car he was a passenger in overturned on the National Heroes Day weekend.

Police said the man was in intensive care at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after the crash, which happened in the early hours of yesterday morning - the day after curfew restrictions were lifted.

A spokesman said the incident happened after an alleged assault in Eastdale Lane, Southampton.

He added the alleged assault victim escaped in a car driven by a 31-year-old woman from St George’s.

But Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell said: “The vehicle apparently overturned, trapping the 33-year-old man underneath.

“He remains hospitalised in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

“The female driver sustained injuries that were less serious in the crash.”

The incident was one of 16 crashes logged by police over the long weekend.

A 21-year-old Sandys man is also in intensive care with internal and head injuries after lost control of his scooter and crashing into a wall.

The crash also happened in Southampton in the early hours of yesterday.

A17-year-old from Sandys also needed hospital treatment after two cars were in collision on Somerset Road last night.

He was later arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and released on police bail.

Mr Cardwell said: “I highlight these three crashes to underscore why the Bermuda Police Service continues to use appropriate traffic enforcement measures and appeal for the co-operation of all motorists.

“We must do everything we can to minimise the risk to ourselves and others of injury or death on Bermuda’s roads.

“It would appear that inattention and driving without due care were factors in most of these incidents.”

Mr Cardwell revealed that officers issued a large amount of tickets for traffic violations over the holiday – with 57 road users stopped for speeding.

He said: “From Friday, June 18 through Monday, June 21, at least 77 tickets were issued for traffic offences, along with 24 motorist advice notices – or official warnings.

“The roads policing unit handed out 57 speeding tickets during the period – as well as tickets for no driver’s licence, driving while disqualified and driving without due care.”

Mr Cardwell added that roadside breath test checkpoints were also in operation over the holiday and that one road user was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

He said: “In addition, police officers responding to regular calls for service during this past holiday weekend issued another 20 traffic tickets for offences including speeding, disobeying a traffic sign, no driver’s licence, driving while disqualified, illegally towing a vehicle, permitting an unlicensed vehicle to be driven and driving without due care.”

He added the 16 accidents are under investigation.

Mr Cardwell said: “It would appear that inattention and driving without due care were factors in most of these incidents.”
