Man arrested for having firearm near Somerset motorcade
A man has been arrested and a firearm seized by police after a motorcycle rider was stopped during the Somerset Cricket Club celebratory motorcade on Saturday evening.
A police spokesman said officers were regulating traffic at about 6pm as the procession of vehicles arrived at St George’s Cricket Club, when they noticed the rider driving erratically on Wellington Slip Road.
The man was stopped and issued with moving violation tickets.
The spokesman said he then violently resisted arrest after officers attempted to detain him for an outstanding warrant.
Officers used tasers on the rider during the struggle, and a search uncovered a firearm in his possession.
The weapon was taken for examination, and the man taken into custody.
The incident was recorded by bystanders on mobile phones, and police have appealed for witnesses to come forward and provide any footage obtained.
Police called on anyone with information to contact Acting Inspector Jason Smith, the senior investigating officer, on 717-0864.
