National security minister condemns shooting
The Minister of National Security condemned Thursday’s shooting which left a 26-year-old man with serious gunshot wounds.
Renee Ming said: “We must break this senseless cycle of violence. I again urge members of the public to assist the police. If you know something, say something.”
Ms Ming added: “As a community, we cannot become complacent and must each do our part to support those individuals and families who are the victims of these crimes and mitigate the risk of further acts of violence by reporting what we know to the police.”
She was speaking after the man, the first victim of gun violence of the year, was shot several times in Fritholme Gardens, Paget at about 8pm last night.
The injured man was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and underwent emergency surgery.
A police spokesman said today the man was recuperating in hospital.
The shooting was also condemned by Scott Pearman, the Opposition One Bermuda Alliance for the area.
Mr Pearman said: “I would like to express my profound sadness to the community and also to the families of those involved in this shooting.
“Gun violence is a senseless attack on our Bermudian way of life. The gang lifestyle leads to nowhere and those who choose to take that path in life will learn the hard way.
“The gun violence is increasing, and will continue to do so until we as a community come together to address the root causes.
“I support the call for any and all witnesses to come forward to assist as best they can. Remaining silent can no longer be the norm.”
Last night’s shooting was the second firearms incident of the year – and the eighth shooting in the last two months.
January 12: police find spent shells found in the area of Deepdale Road, Pembroke, after receiving reports of gunfire.
December 29: a man was injured in a shooting on Mount Hill, Pembroke.
December 29: a man was shot in the leg in an incident on Cambridge Road in Sandys.
December 28: police responded to reports of shots fired in the area of Deepdale and Parsons Road in Pembroke. Spent cartridges and live rounds were found at the scene.
December 10: police responded to reports of several shots fired in the area of One-Way Deepdale and Parsons Road in Pembroke.
November 29: police heard gunshots in the area of Court Street and Dundonald Streets in Pembroke. One man was injured.
November 20: after reports of a man being shot and injured on Court Street, police located a man in Middletown with a bullet wound to his left foot.
Detectives appealed for witnesses and said they wanted to speak to anyone who may have seen two men on a white motorcycle, travelling at high speed west on South Road after the shooting.
A police spokesman, the rider was dressed in black clothing and the pillion passenger was wearing a tan jacket.
Police want to trace a car seen being driven erratically and headed east on South Road around the same time.
