Cabinet reviewing award of new CCTV contract
A contract for new, island-wide CCTV security cameras will be awarded after a Cabinet review, according to Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security.
A procurement notice posted by the ministry in July called for a hybrid fibre-optic and wireless system.
An evaluation committee reviewed submissions sent in by September 8 and will pass on its recommendations.
Mr Weeks said the price tag for the improvements would be known after Cabinet decides.
But he said the move would involve upgrading and expanding the existing system.
He added: “I would like to think the main infrastructure is already in place.”
Mr Weeks said it would boost road safety as well as crime prevention.
“An upgraded CCTV system will result in increased safety for our community, as a functional CCTV system will serve as a deterrent to potential criminals,” he said.
“The system will also aid in the identification of suspects in the event of criminal activity.”
Improving the security network was among pledges in the 2021 Throne Speech.
Another 2021 item is the creation of a Cybersecurity Act, setting minimum standards for critical assets such as energy supply, telecommunications, water infrastructure and government data.
Mr Weeks said the legislation would go before MPs in the March sitting of the House of Assembly.
