Inmates praised for passing anger management course

Seven prison inmates have been applauded after passing a course in anger management.

The Life Minus Violence curriculum involved a cognitive behavioural group work environment focused on reducing the risk of aggression within students who have a history of aggressive behaviour.

The course examines core aggression literature and takes advantage of the recent developments in aggression theory.

Students explored the motivational factors of aggressive behaviour and learnt that people can have different motives for hostility.

The programme emphasised student strengths and occasions where aggression had not been chosen to further enhance understanding of how that behaviour can be replicated.

Michael Weeks, the Minister for National Security, who was on hand when the participants received their certificates, said the graduates had proved that adversity and deep pain could be overcome.

Mr Weeks said: "Many times, we hear negativity over some of the things that happen behind these walls and not always about the positive developments.

"Let me take this opportunity to thank the members of staff within the department of corrections who have worked closely with the participants and who have helped to make it successful. Your work and dedication have not gone unnoticed."

“I want to thank the family members here today who have supported their loved ones who have taken part in this programme.

"I believe that family support is crucial whenever we are working with people who are facing life challenges and are looking towards rehabilitation within the wider community.

Mr Weeks ended his presentation with “an inspirational quote” from Bob Marley, taken from his song Wake Up And Live.

“He says, 'Life is one big road with lots of signs. So when you riding through the ruts, don't complicate your mind. Flee from hate, mischief and jealousy. Don't bury your thoughts, put your vision to reality. Wake up and live’.“
