Police arrest 11 people for impaired driving
Police today voiced concern over “prolific” drink driving after 11 people were arrested between Thursday and Sunday at checkpoints for impaired driving.
Last week, there were 1,868 instances logged where officers spoke with drivers to assess whether they had been drinking.
Police tested 24 drivers, with 11 arrested for impaired driving after failing the alco-analyser at Hamilton Police Station.
A further five drivers were arrested on outstanding court apprehension warrants.
Six were handed moving violation tickets, with six more given motorist advice notices – meaning they got official written warnings.
Two were arrested for taking a motorcycle without the owner’s consent, and two stolen motorcycles were recovered.
So far this February, 27 motorists have been arrested for impaired driving offences – compared with 11 for the same period in 2022.
Acting Superintendent Robert Cardwell, of the tactical operations division, said: “We continue to be concerned around how prolific impaired driving is in our community.
“Even in the face of advertisement, there are those who will continue to take the chance.
“Eleven arrests over the course of the last weekend equates to 11 lives saved.”
He added: “Our message remains: if you drink, do not drive.”
