Activists appeal for end to violence
Community activists called for young people to turn away from violence on the anniversary of a shooting at the Devonshire Recreation Club.
Glenn Fubler and others made the call at an event at City Hall, saying that while no one was killed in the March 2022 shooting, a man and a woman were injured.
“We gather here today to remind the community of these challenging times, and we invite those who have been caught up in this cycle of violence to study war no more, to lay down their swords and shields and embrace our community,” he said.
Dennis Lister, the Speaker of the House, joined the call, saying: “We all have concerns about what we see happening with our young people — the violence and the results of that violence.
“We recognise that our young people are not bad people. They are just misguided. We want to reach them in a way that says that they are not written off by society, they are a part of our society. They are our future.
“We have to make sure that the wrong turns they have taken can be corrected and we can set them on the right path that leads them to being a positive contributor to our society.”
Martha Dismont, the former head of the Family Centre, said the community must remember what has occurred in the past and learn from it.
“This event today is an important event because not only is it giving us the opportunity to remember what occurred, but it is another opportunity for us to put our hands out to these young people and say whatever has gone on in your past, we are here for you now and in the future,” she said.
