Four teenagers between the age of 15 and 19 have been arrested over a string of smash-and-grab burglaries.

Two men have also been arrested for burglaries targeting gas stations, police said yesterday.

The arrests were made as part of Operation Azkaban, set up in response to a spate of break-ins over the past two months.

The Bermuda Police Service crime division, supported by the tactical and community policing divisions, arrested a 46-year-old man on May 30, and a 36-year-old man the next day, in connection with burglaries mainly aimed at petrol stations.

Police executed warrants at homes in Smith’s and Hamilton Parish and seized items linked to the burglaries, along with a stolen motorcycle.

The 46-year-old suspect has pleaded guilty in court to several offences, while the 36-year-old was released on police bail.

On Tuesday, more search warrants took police to homes in Pembroke, Devonshire and Smith’s.

Goods suspected to be stolen were seized, as well as two stolen motorcycles.

The four teenagers suspected of smash-and-grab burglaries in Hamilton and Sandys were arrested.

A fifth person was arrested on suspicion of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply, after police drugs during a search of his property.

A “large” quantity of suspect cash was also seized.

Detective Superintendent Sherwin Joseph, in charge of the crime division, said police believed they had “successfully disrupted and dismantled two distinct groups” linked to commercial break-ins in Hamilton and elsewhere.

“A number of items suspected to be stolen goods have been recovered, and we are now working with local businesses and members of our community to assist with identifying these items”.

The matters remain under investigation.
