A 45-year-old man was arrested and drugs with an estimated value of $2.9 million on the island’s streets was seized last week in a joint operation between police and customs agents.

Last Thursday, officers conducted Operation Porcini after HM Customs intercepted a shipment of the drugs MDMA, known as ecstasy or molly, with cannabis and the cannabinoid drug, shatter.

Search warrants were executed at properties in Pembroke and St George’s.

Acting Detective Superintendent Sherwin Joseph, in charge of the Crime Division, called it “a significant seizure, which has prevented a substantial amount of controlled drugs from being distributed into our community”.

He added: “The drug ecstasy, in particular, can cause severe impairment and permanent brain damage. In some cases, ecstasy use can lead to stroke, heart attack and death.

“We will continue to work tirelessly with HM Customs to identify and disrupt the importation, sales and distribution of illicit drugs.

“The success of Operation Porcini demonstrates the effectiveness of our joint efforts and unwavering determination to keep our community safe.”

Police said no further information would be given at present, as the drugs unit continues investigations.

The raid was among a series of high-profile seizures on the island this year.

In April, Operation Furud netted cannabis with an estimated street value topping $14 million.

Police from the Financial Crime Unit, Criminal Investigation Unit and the Tactical Division stopped two vehicles leaving the airport executive jet facility.

Nine suspects including a senior customs officer were arrested, with houses raided across several parishes.

Police and customs also intercepted $2 million in suspected cannabis, with four people arrested and a shipping container seized, in a raid on March 19.

Additionally, in November 2022, a police warrant at a Smith’s home ended with six arrests and the seizure of cannabis and heroin estimated to be worth $1.3 million.
