Thirty packages of drugs found in luggage

Thirty packages of suspected drugs were found in three pieces of luggage during an airport inspection, the jury in a drugs case heard yesterday.

Edward Jaloni Albouy, 29, has denied charges that he imported MDMA, also known as ecstasy, cannabis and cannabis resin into the island.

He also pleaded not guilty to charges of possessing the drugs with intent to supply.

Detective Constable O’Neil Swaby told the Supreme Court that he was called to the LF Wade Airport on September 3, 2017 after customs officers found suspicious packages in Mr Albouy’s luggage.

He said that the luggage – two suitcases and a black knapsack – were confiscated and analysed at the Hamilton Police Station two days later.

Officers found several bags of diapers and T-shirts but inside those bags were packages of various unknown substances.

Mr Swaby said that he and his team of officers found 16 bags of “plantlike material”, six blocks of a dark brown substance, and eight blocks of an off-white substance.

The Supreme Court heard how customs officers selected Mr Albouy for a secondary inspection after he arrived to the island on a flight from the UK.

Officers detected a strong smell of cannabis coming from the packs of diapers and alerted authorities.

T’Deana Spencer, for the Crown, told the court that further analysis of the packages revealed almost 3kg of MDMA, worth as much as $230,000 if sold in the streets of Bermuda.

She added that a further analysis revealed the packages contained more than 1kg of cannabis resin, worth up to $120,000, and more than 1.5kg of cannabis, worth up to $80,000.

The trial continues.
