Police arrested a man on suspicion of possessing a canister of pepper spray, which is a prohibited weapon.

The man, who was stopped in a car at 3pm in Devonshire on Saturday, was also held on suspicion of having a controlled drug and drug equipment.

A mobile patrol stopped the vehicle near the junction of Middle Road and Montpelier Road on suspicion of having illegal window tinting.

A strong odour of cannabis was noticed, and the driver was told the vehicle would be searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act, police said.

He initially refused to leave the car before complying, and a search uncovered plantlike material and a grinder, along with a small canister of spray.

The driver was cautioned and subsequently arrested.
