Police say Marco Warren hit-and-run case at ‘very critical stage’
Police have called for help from the public in the investigation of the road incident that claimed the life of the popular 29-year-old footballer Marco Warren.
“We are actively pursing a line of inquiry,” Detective Inspector Jason Smith said at a press conference yesterday, joined by Mr Warren’s family, including Kalay Hollis, the girlfriend of the PHC captain, with their infant son, Vega, in her arms.
Mr Warren was killed on North Shore Road, just west of Trinity Church Road, Hamilton Parish, at about 3.15am on May 14.
“We are at a fairly advanced stage. The investigation is progressing, and we are asking for the public’s assistance,” Mr Smith added. “We have had some public assistance.
“We are at a very critical stage.”
Members of the public have come forward with statements, and police have reviewed CCTV footage.
Police also said they have received overseas assistance in the case, specifically from a forensic expert in the United States.
Mr Smith declined to characterise the incident as a hit-and-run, saying the investigation was open.
He added that particulars would be determined after discussions with the Department of Public Prosecutions “at the appropriate time”.
The officer said it was crucial that anyone who was on North Shore Road and might have seen Mr Warren walking back from Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club get in touch with police.
Mr Warren was heading home from a party at the club in the early hours of Mother’s Day.
Police particularly wish to hear from anyone driving between 3am and 3.15am in the area of the junctions with Panorama Drive and Trinity Church Road.
Tamara Stevens, Mr Warren’s cousin, thanked police, while Mr Warren’s parents, Wendie and Dwight Warren, stood by.
Keisha Hollis, the mother of Mr Warren’s partner, was also present.
Ms Stevens said: “Initially we were a bit upset with the investigation, but we are very much more hopeful at this point.”
She appealed to “anyone that has any information, any information whatsoever, that can help shed some light on the accident”.
“Marco was so special to us. He was a small person, but he had such a big personality.
“He was working on a family crest for us that has not been finished. He has a son that he is not going to be able to watch grow.
“He has a girlfriend that he is not going to be able to propose to. He has sisters that won’t be able to make memories with him.”
Ms Stevens said she was “begging and pleading” for help that could “bring Marco’s killer to justice”.
“It might seem small to you, but it might be the exact piece of the puzzle we need to solve this.”
Ms Stevens urged anyone with any details to call her in confidence on 707-1636, e-mail her at tamarastevens00@gmail.com, or even leave a message at her car, a red Toyota Corolla with the licence number 37128.
