Man shot to death in Warwick

A man was shot dead in Warwick Parish last night.

Police said there were reports of several gunshots in the area of Cobbs Hill and the Railway Trail at about 8.50pm.

A spokesman for the Bermuda Police Service said: “The male injured in tonight’s confirmed firearms incident in Warwick has sadly succumbed to his injuries.”

Police arrived at the scene earlier and confirmed that a male had been shot.

The man was taken by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment, but succumbed to his injuries.

An investigation into the incident has been launched. Anyone with information is asked to call the main police number on 295-0011.

This is the second gun murder of the year after Kyari Flood was found dead in February.

Michael Dunkley, the Shadow Minister of National Security, said this morning: “Another senseless shooting; another life taken unnecessarily. When does this end?

“We cannot keep our heads in the sand, hoping that incidences like these will just fade away.

“We have cold-hearted killers in our midst who are destroying families and the community without a moment’s hesitation. They must be brought to justice swiftly.”

He added: “Bermuda, please say something if you know something.

“The police cannot solve crimes on their own; they need your information, no matter how minute you may feel it is.

“On behalf of the One Bermuda Alliance, I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”

Police were this year optimistic that firearms incidents were on the decrease after there had been 28 in 2022, and nine murders.

Darrin Simons, the Commissioner of Police, said last month: “I appreciate we’re not yet at the end of the year, but that represents a significant reduction — but ‘zero’ is the number we want to get to.”

Police launched a murder investigation after the body of Mr Flood was found in the Friswells Hill area. A spokesman said a member of the public discovered his body in “a secluded overgrown area” off Border Lane South and Friswells Road in Pembroke.

After a period of abatement, two men were shot on August 6 — one in the chest and one in the hand. Police said that at about 11.13pm, there were several reports of gunshots in Sandys, in the area of Caroline Bay and George’s Bay Road.

A man was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds on September 13 after a reported shooting in Paget. At about 1.10am, police responded to reports of shots in the area of Tribe Road No 5, just off Ord Road.

Then on September 16, police confirmed a shooting incident in the area of Court Street and Elliot Street in North East Hamilton. Officers were dispatched to the area shortly after 11pm after a report of gunshots.

On October 18, diners ran for cover after a gunman opened fire in a drive-by shooting outside Bermy Cuisine restaurant in Hamilton. Police said they believed there were two intended victims who were targeted as they left the popular diner.
