MPs condemn ‘senseless’ killing

Deeply saddened: Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security (File photograph)

Politicians have condemned the “senseless” murder of a man who was shot dead in Devonshire this week.

Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, urged any witnesses with information to contact the police, while Michael Dunkley, the shadow national security minister, questioned how the killer could sleep at night.

The 53-year-old victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the attack on Mary Victoria Road at about 7.45pm on Monday.

Neighbours raised the alarm and the injured man, who was an area resident, was taken to hospital for emergency treatment, but was pronounced dead shortly after.

Mr Weeks offered his condolences today to the victim’s family, and said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred last night in Devonshire resulting in the loss of a life.

“The violence that led to this senseless act affects us all, and we will support the Bermuda Police Service with its investigation, to bring those responsible to justice.

“I urge anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward and assist the investigators.”

Mr Dunkley made the same appeal for witnesses to come forward.

He said: “Less than a month ago, Bermuda experienced the loss of life as a result of gun violence and already we’ve found ourselves here again.

“The OBA extends its deepest condolences to the loved-ones of the deceased.

“Families should be preparing for the festive holiday season, not making unexpected funeral preparations. When does this senselessness stop?

“What kind of sick satisfaction are these gunmen gaining? How do they sleep peacefully knowing that they’ve left a family devastated? Where has the moral fibre of this country gone?

“Too many lives have been snatched away at the hands of cold-hearted killers. Will we continue to remain silent, or we will find the courage and speak to the police?

“Please, if you know something say something.”

Investigators have yet to reveal the identity of the victim, although they have confirmed that he was not known to police.

More details are expected to be released at a police press conference tomorrow.

The killing is the fourth murder of the year.

In February, the body of Kyari Flood, 23, was discovered in a secluded, overgrown area off Border Lane South and Friswells Road in Pembroke. Mr Flood had been shot.

A month later, Marco Perinchief, 49, was found unconscious on a grass verge on Clyde Best Lane in Sandys and subsequently died from his injuries.

Last month, Wilfred Outerbridge Jr, 35, and a father of three, died after he was shot several times at his home by the Railway Trail in Warwick.

Anyone with information concerning the latest shooting was asked to call Detective Sergeant Odessa Philip, of the serious crime unit, on 717-2193 or e-mail her at ophilip@bps.bm.

Witnesses can also call the main police number, 295-0011, or the confidential Crime Stoppers Hotline, 800-8477. Alternatively, members of the public can share information with a police officer.
