More than a third of a new CCTV system has been installed, with a completion date for the network set for the end of April, said the Ministry of National Security.

Approximately 80 per cent of the command-centre infrastructure is established and the existing system remains operational.

An upgraded CCTV network system was originally announced three years ago in the 2021 Throne speech.

In February 2023, Michael Weeks, the national security minister, discussed contract details relating to the installation of the CCTV cameras.

In July 2023, the Government signed a $4 million deal with Digicel to upgrade Bermuda’s CCTV monitoring system.

In November, Mr Weeks announced the installation would be completed by the end of the year.

A number of stores in Hamilton have to been hit by smash-and-grab robberies recently.

Police are investigating last week’s jewellery theft at Walker Christopher’s store and advised people not to confront armed individuals under any circumstance.

Danielle Riviere, the chief executive of the Chamber of Commerce, said: “There is growing concern about the increase in break-ins. Even if very little money or items are stolen the cost of damages are an issue. The daytime robbery last week also raises concerns for staff and customers and concerns that criminals are getting more brazen.”

“Police Constable Christopher Douglas and the Bermuda Police Department have done a fabulous job making sure businesses are well informed about what is happening within the City of Hamilton and are working with businesses to assess security risks,” she added.

“Businesses should identify specific security risks unique to their location and type of business, use high-definition cameras integrated with alarm systems, and continuously update security procedures to respond to changing criminal behaviour,” Ms Riviere said.

“The Ministry of Security has commissioned the island-wide installation of CCTV, which will help bring criminals to justice and will hopefully be a deterrent.

“Businesses can set up their own security systems and have practices for securing goods and money to mitigate loss if a break-in occurs. The police department also offers an assessment of risk, which is very helpful to businesses.”
