Police warning over phone scam
Police warned the public this afternoon about a phone scam in which callers tried to get banking information from their intended victims.
A spokesman for the Bermuda Police Service said that people were being contacted from local telephone numbers and were told that their credit or debit cards had been flagged for suspicious purchases.
The caller would then ask for verification of credit or debit card information, including expiry dates, the name on the card and the card verification number.
Intended victims were then allegedly asked to download “AnyDesk” software to enable remote access to their computer.
Police recommend that anyone contacted about their finances by someone who was not a trusted family member or friend should not provide any information about their bank cards or money, their bank account number, PIN or any personal information.
Anyone who suspected that they might be an intended victim should not engage in conversation and instead inform their financial institution and call police on 295-0011.
