Police make 36 arrests over Cup Match

There were 36 arrests over the Cup Match holiday including three for possession of a bladed article and ten for driving under the influence.

A spokesman for the Bermuda Police Service said that a policing plan implemented over the extended weekend had successfully prevented any major criminal activity and that the majority of arrests made were for outstanding warrants.

However, police raised concerns about the number of DUI offences that took place and the possession of knives.

There was also a number of domestic violence reports, which police said were quickly acted upon and, in some instances, had sparked investigations.

On domestic violence incidents, Assistant Commissioner of Police Antoine Daniels said: “In recent times, there has been a noticeable uptick in such reports.

“It’s too early to say whether there has been an increase in these incidents or whether victims are now feeling more empowered to come forward and speak out against this less-than-desirable behaviour.

“Either way, your BPS has adopted a zero-tolerance approach for these acts and assure those individuals who rightly choose not to suffer in silence that we will do what is required to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

Mr Daniels also noted: “Our ongoing high-visibility patrols and heightened enforcement efforts have resulted in the seizure of several knives and other bladed items.

“Often, upon questioning, those found in possession of these items claim to be carrying them for protection.

“However, it has been proven that carrying a knife or other bladed item significantly increases the risk of becoming involved in a dangerous situation rather than preventing you from becoming a victim.

“Our advice is always that should you feel threatened, walk away from possible confrontation.”

Mr Daniels acknowledged there were a number of “skirmishes” after the cricket match at Somerset Cricket Club ended on Friday.

He said: “These were quickly dealt with by police assisted by the security staff on hand as well as by members of the Royal Bermuda Regiment.

“There was one incident which was recorded and the video circulated on social media. That matter remains under investigation and we urge anyone with information to please call 211, or, the main police number, 295-0011.”

Mr Daniels thanked officers for their commitment to making Bermuda safer as they worked through the holiday period to ensure there were no major incidents.

He added: “This would not have been possible without the assistance of the Reserve Police and the Royal Bermuda Regiment, and of course you, the public.

“Thank you for your continued support.”
