Shots were fired at police in an incident shortly after midnight on Friday in the Khyber Pass area of Warwick.

A police spokeswoman said that officers were approaching the junction with Quarry Lane when they saw two males on a motorcycle travelling south along Khyber Pass.

The passenger on the motorcycle then discharged a firearm at the officers.

“Officers began pursuit which eventually led to shots being fired. The suspects made good their escape,” the spokeswoman said.

The length of Khyber Pass was closed on Saturday morning as police continued to investigate the incident.

Ben Smith, the Shadow Minister of National Security, decried the incident.

Mr Smith, while grateful no one was hurt, expressed shock that perpetrators had opened fire on police.

“Sadly, this reckless behaviour demonstrates a new level of low among these criminals that I didn’t think was possible after the incidences we have endured over the past few weeks,” he said.

“But one thing is certain — sooner or later their luck will run out. Residents of Bermuda, I implore you to have the courage to come forward if you know who is committing gun crimes.

“These perpetrators will brag to someone that they got away after shooting at the police. If you hear it, you need to tell someone.

“This callous level of crime will lead to innocent bystanders and our hard-working police officers being harmed. These cowards must be stopped.”

Mr Smith concluded: “It takes a village and Bermuda needs to return to the community it once was.”

Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, also condemned the incident.

He said: “This was a heinous and cowardly act of violence directed at our police officers last night. We are grateful that no one was hurt during this dangerous incident.

“This is a threat to law and order, and we must all do our part to bring the culprits to justice.

“This kind of criminal behaviour has no place in our society, and we will not tolerate attacks on those who are committed to keeping our communities safe.

“I urge anyone with information about this incident to come forward and assist the authorities by speaking to the police or contacting Crime Stoppers at 800-8477. Together, we can ensure justice is served.”
