Police target impaired drivers over new year
Police have vowed to keep up a high presence island-wide during the new year’s holiday.
Detective Superintendent Sherwin Joseph, officer in charge of the Bermuda Police Service’s Crime Division, said officers will take a “zero-tolerance approach” to traffic offences, especially impaired driving.
He thanked the public for ensuring that the Christmas weekend was free of any major incidents or criminal activity and said roadside sobriety checks that commenced on December 24 would remain until Thursday.
Mr Joseph explained: “We urge you to make the necessary arrangements to ensure that you return home safely, if you plan on consuming alcohol while out celebrating.
“Additionally, driving after using any mind-altering substance is considered impaired driving.
“Do not operate any vehicle if you have used any drugs, prescription or otherwise, that may alter your mental state.”
People can expect to see police at the annual onion drop in St George's and during New Year’s Day, and the Bermuda Football Association’s Shield and Friendship Trophy finals at Somerset Cricket Club, also on January 1.
Mr Joseph asked for people to co-operate with officers who will be searching vehicles according to various sections of the law.
He added: “We would much prefer there is compliance by members of the public rather than our officers having to exercise their powers of arrest and/or charge anyone with criminal offences.
“However, when and where required, we will decisively address any acts of criminality or antisocial behaviour.”
