Police call for video in witness appeal after teen’s murder

Heartfelt plea: Detective Chief Inspector Derricka Burns with Alvaro and Monica Arruda, the parents of the late Ethan Arruda (Photograph by Alva Solomon)

Four months after he was fatally stabbed, police today renewed calls for witnesses to the murder of Ethan Arruda, who died of a single stab wound during a house party last October.

Mr Arruda was stabbed in the midst of a Hallowe’en gathering attended by between 50 and 100 people at Devonshire Bay Road, shortly after midnight on October 27.

The 17-year-old died several hours later while undergoing treatment at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Flanked by the teenager’s emotional parents at the Hamilton Police Station, Detective Chief Inspector Derricka Burns of the Serious Crime Unit said investigators had interviewed 50 people in connection with the killing.

Two were arrested days after the murder.

Ms Burns said: “There are still quite a few people that we haven’t spoken to and who we believe have pertinent information that would assist in bringing this matter to a close.

“Today I’m joined by Ethan’s parents and together we are urging people to speak up and tell us what they know.

“I want to stress that every piece of information, whether big or small, will help put together the pieces of this investigation.”

Ms Burns said the Bermuda Police Service had video clips showing the aftermath of the incident.

She added: “We believe there are other videos that show the actual incident or some sort of altercation taking place.

“We ask those people, if you have those clips, to please contact us and bring those clips to us.”

Asked about circumstances leading up to the incident, Ms Burns said there had been suggestions that “some of the people there had their jewellery taken”.

“We are investigating that as well.”

Ms Burns acknowledged that some witnesses might have been reluctant to come forward.

“It’s probably fear; that is a challenge that has been a part of our community for some time now,” she said.

Ms Burns assured residents there were “avenues” in the criminal justice system designed to protect their identities.

In tears, the teen’s father, Alvaro Arruda, spoke of his son’s plans as he made an appeal for witnesses to come forward.

Mr Arruda said: “We are asking for your help; our family is grieving and we need your support to bring the truth to light.

“Please help us find peace and justice for Ethan.”

He added: “Over the last year with a group of children his age, he helped form a powerful support network to help one another.

“So they can talk openly, share experiences and help each other feel seen and heard.”

Mr Arruda said his son had been excited about his future, with ambitious plans.

Anyone with information is urged to call Ms Burns on 717-0921 or send an e-mail to dburns@bps.bm.

Witnesses can also call the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers number, 800-8477.

They may speak with familiar officers or use the BPS Community Reporting Portal at portal.police.bm.
