Police report three gun incidents – one near a school
Police have called for the public’s help as they investigate three firearms incidents that took place within 48 hours.
Detective Chief Inspector Jason Smith confirmed a series of gun incidents across Pembroke — one of which was said to have happened near a school, understood by The Royal Gazette to be the Care Learning Centre at Mount Hill.
Mr Smith assured the public yesterday that no one was injured.
He added: “The Bermuda Police Service are investigating and taking every step to bring those responsible to justice.”
The first incident took place on Tuesday at about 10.20pm in the Spanish Point Road area of Seagull Lane.
Police were told that someone attempted to fire two shots into a residence. They later confirmed that a firearm had been discharged.
Officers were alerted to another firearms incident at about 11.10am yesterday at what was described as a school campus behind Arnold’s Family Market near St John’s Road.
Mr Smith said that the school had its own protocol that it would have put in place.
He added that it came to the police’s attention “sometime later in that day”.
A third firearms incident happened in the Friswells Hill area at about 9.10pm the same day.
Police investigated the area and confirmed this morning that a firearm had been discharged.
Mr Smith said that the suspects in these incidents shared a similar description — two males wearing dark clothing and motorcycle helmets with dark visors.
One of the suspects was described as being slim and between 5ft 5in and 5ft 6in.
Mr Smith urged people in these areas who heard what sounded like gunshots, or saw anyone who fitted the descriptions of these suspects on a motorcycle, to come forward.
He also encouraged those in the area of Spanish Point, St John’s Road or Friswells Hill with CCTV cameras to assist with this investigation.
Mr Smith said: “This is very concerning to us and we have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding these incidents.
“We are asking for the public’s assistance and that, if you saw any suspicious activity in those areas at those times, please make contact with us.”
Mr Smith said it was too early to know if the firearms incidents were related or carried out by the same individuals.
He added that police were keeping “a very open mind”.
Acting Detective Inspector Annika Donawa will be in charge of the investigations and can be contacted at 717-2250.
