Gold for Bermuda's Daniel Oatley

Bermuda’s Daniel Oatley stood proudly on the podium today at the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in the Dominican Republic.The Saltus Grammar School student, who is making his debut at the regional championships this year, won the gold medal in the boys 15-16 individual time trial after covering the 10 kilometre course five seconds faster than nearest rival Zahir Figueroa of Belize.Curacao’s Stijn Watkis rounded off the top three respectively.Commenting on Oatley’s success from Santo Domingo, Bermuda Bicycle Association president and team coach Peter Dunne told The Royal Gazette: “Daniel's performance was spectacular and it is a continuation of the great trial results this year in Bermuda. He did a great time considering the competition and it shows his continued progress in this discipline.“This competition is getting harder each year as the level of cycling rises across the region. This makes our team's success that more impressive. At the same time it is a reminder that the huge commitment our team has made to their preparation is becoming the norm for all these countries.”Also competing in today’s individual time trial were Nathaniel Hartwig, Mark Godfrey, Vashon Cann and Gabriella Arnold.Hartwig placed eighth in the boys 15-16 age group, Godfrey and Cann finished eighth and 25th in the boys 17-18 division while Arnold was sixth in the girls 15-18 age group.Bermuda is being represented at this year’s Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships by eight of the Island’s most promising cyclists.Tomorrow’s final day of the two-day event will feature road races held on courses varying with each age group.Oately and Hartwig are due to compete in the boys 15-16 road race (37 miles) along with Nico Barclay and Daelan Richardson, Cann, Godfrey and Deshi Smith in the 17-18 boys road race (49 and a half miles) and Arnold in the girls road race (26 miles).Last year saw Arnold win the bronze medal in the girls time trial and road race.“Tomorrow is a big day for our team with the road race and everyone will be in action,” said Dunne, who is being assisted in the Caribbean by team manager Kent Richardson.
