Junior cyclists to compete in Caribbean

Bermuda’s cyclist will put their skills to the test against the region’s elite during this weekend’s Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in the Dominican Republic.Representing the Island are returning medallist Gabriella Arnold, Vashon Cann, Mark Godfrey, Deshi Smith, Daelan Richardson, Daniel Oatley, Nathaniel Hartwig and Nico Barclay.Hartwig is competing in the boys 15-16 time trial and road race along with Oatley while Cann and Godfrey are riding in the boys 17-18 time trial and road race. Smith is competing in the boys 17-18 road race while Richardson and Barclay are taking part in the boys 15-16 road race.Oately, Barclay and Hartwig are all making their first appearance at the championships while Cann is making his last.Barclay is a last-minute replacement for the injured Justin Ferreira who is still recovering from foot surgery.Arnold, who won the bronze medal in the girls time trial and road race at last year’s Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Puerto Rico, is competing in the same two events this year.Molly Pilgrim, who competed with Arnold in the girls division last year, has been ruled out through injury. Pilgrim won gold medals in the time trial and road race in Puerto Rico.Bermuda's team arrived in Santo Domingo on Thursday and took the opportunity yesterday to do some light training and inspect the courses.Accompanying the team to the Caribbean is Bermuda Bicycle Association president Peter Dunne and manager Kent Richardson.Dunne has high expectations of senior boys Cann, Godfrey and Smith - who are all returning to this competition - in both disciplines.“Our 17-18 boys are very well prepared, both individually and as a team,” he said. “Mark, Deshi and Vashon have already had success as a team this summer in the Tour de FCCC in July and we have been working to build on that for the last month and a half.”This year’s two-day Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships gets underway today in Santo Domingo with a 10 kilometre individual time trial while tomorrow will see road races held. Courses for tomorrow’s road races will vary with each age group, with the senior boys to race on a 48½ mile course, junior boys on a 37 mile course and the girls over 26 miles. The Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships were originally due to be held last month but were postponed and rescheduled because of Tropical Storm Isaac which passed through the region.
