Oatley and Arnold strike gold in Dominican Rep.
Promising cyclists Daniel Oatley and Gabriella Arnold captured glory at the weekend’s Caribbean Junior Championships in the Dominican Republic.Oately capped a memorable debut at the regional championships by winning the gold medal in the boys 15-16 individual time trial while Arnold won gold in the girls 15-18 road race.Saltus Grammar School student Oately admitted that his stunning performance surpassed expectations.“I’m still shocked that I won,” he told The Royal Gazette yesterday.“But when I look back on all the training I’ve completed I can finally comprehend it. All that’s left is to train harder for next year.”Oatley completed the 10 kilometre course during Saturday’s time trial five seconds faster than nearest rival Zahir Figueroa of Belize to claim regional bragging rights at the first attempt.Arnold improved on her double bronze medal winning display in the girls time trial and road race at last year’s championships in Puerto Rico as she struck gold in the road race this time around.Oatley’s schoolmate attributed her latest success to making the right calls when it mattered most with the title on the line.“I chose the right wheel to follow into the final sprint and with about 150 metres to go I was able to attack the girl from Curacao and held on to beat her at the end,” she said. “I am extremely happy with my effort as I pushed myself to my limit.”Arnold’s triumph in the road race follows on the heels of compatriot Molly Pilgrim who won the same event at last year’s event. Pilgrim was denied the opportunity to defend her title this year through injury. Also competing in Saturday’s individual time trials were Nathaniel Hartwig, Mark Godfrey, Vashon Cann and Arnold.Hartwig placed eighth in the boys 15-16 age group, Godfrey and Cann finished eighth and 25th in the boys 17-18 division while Arnold was sixth in the girls 15-18 age group.Other local riders in action during yesterday’s road races were Oatley, Hartwig, Cann, Godfrey, Nico Barclay, Daelan Richardson and Deshi Smith. In the boys 15-16 road race Oatley made it into a group chasing the sole leader and in the final sprint managed to finish in the top seven for a strong result. Hartwig and Barclay contested the sprint from the peloton while Richardson suffered an early puncture, leaving him to chase with a small group.Smith, Cann and Godfrey all failed to complete the 17-18 boys road race.Smith and Cann were forced to retire through mechanical problems while Godfrey succumbed to the heat and severe cramp.
