Mechanical problem halts Mayho

Top young cyclist Dominique Mayho suffered a setback in his first race on local roads since his trip to France when bike problems forced him to pull out of last Sunday’s 23-mile time trial.Mayho, the Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race champion, was hoping to show other competitors what he had learned during two months of training abroad, but was unable to complete the event when the chain got caught between the wheel and back gears halfway through the race and he lost valuable time in repairing the problem before deciding to pull out.The course took the competitors from Bacardi building on Pitts Bay Road towards Spanish Point and down North Shore Road to the airport roundabout and back. Mayho was racing back up Blue Hole Hill when the mishap occurred, leaving him as one of only two competitors not to complete the race.“I made the mistake of changing the wheels the day before the time trial,” said Mayho yesterday. “Different wheels have different spacing with the gears so as I was shifting up, the chain got caught between the wheel and the back gears.“Because it took so long to get the chain untangled it didn’t make sense to keep riding because I couldn’t get the time I wanted. I was upset, it was a dumb mistake.”Mayho is one of five riders who will represent Bermuda at the Elite Caribbean Cycling Championships in Antigua on October 20 and 21. Two months of training with UCC Vivonne club has put Mayho in peak condition ahead of the trip when he will join team-mates Mark Hatherley, Geri Mewett, Darren Glasford and lone female rider Nicole Mitchell.“I feel good, I feel I’m as fit as I could be,” said Mayho who completed some 3,600 kilometres during training in France.Hatherley, in the open category, was the overall winner in the 23.3 mile time trial, completing the course in 55:11, 34 seconds faster than Neil de Ste Croix (55:35) who was one of three veterans turning in the next three best times overall. Kent Richardson was third in 56:15 and Darren Glasford fourth in 56:17.Mitchell, 12th overall, was the first female open finisher, completing the event in one hour, five seconds. Belinda Castree (1:05.05) and Heather Roque (1:07.10) rounded out the top three female finishers. Castree had the 24th best time while Roque was 28th overall.Nahje Smith won the male 10 and under 1.6 mile event in 5:35 while Rhea Seymour was the first 10 and under female in 6:22. In the 7.8 mile time trial, Zion Dowling was second overall and the male 11-12 age group winner in 24:02 with Alex Pilgrim second in his age group and third overall in 24:47. Christian Oatley, in the boys 13-14, was first overall over the same distance with a time of 23:21 while Victoria Davis won the girls 13-14 in 24:54.All the top cyclists will be back on the road this Sunday when the final title race of the season, the IBC Criterium Championships, is staged on Front Street. Racing will start at 8.15am with the Juniors B and C category riders, before the Pee Wee races start at 9am. The Junior Championships will begin at 10.10 and the Open Championships at 11.00. Those in the Junior Championships will ride for 40 minutes plus one lap while the Open competitors will do 55 minutes plus one lap.
