National titles up for grabs at Ferry Reach
The battle for the Winners Edge Mountain Biking Championship will take centre stage on Sunday at Ferry Reach Park when riders vie for national titles.Having won the Bicycle Work MTB Series, Neil de ste Croix will be one of the obvious choices for the title having won four of the eight series events. His biggest competition will come from Dominique Mayho and Mark Hatherley.“With his Bermuda Regiment duties to be fulfilled and a renewed focus on road race preparation ahead of the 2013 NatWest Island Games, Mayho’s eye has not been on the off road scene,” said Bermuda Bicycle Association (BBA) president Peter Dunne.“With just a single victory this season where he has raced just three times in the dirt, the handling skills of de ste Croix will force Mayho to rely on his superior power in order to lift the champion’s trophy.“For Mark who is always pressing to make the race competitive, he will have to get off to the quick start of de ste Croix and Mayho if he wants to be able to take home the top prize.”The other big battle of the day will be in the Junior Male race where Deshi Smith and Daniel Oatley are the main contenders.Smith has been racing in the top category this season, and should have a slight advantage over Oatley who ran away with the Adult B category title. Also in the reckoning for top honours will be Robin Horsfield who should give Oatley and Smith a battle. The Junior Female category pits defending champion Gabriella Arnold against a trio of younger girls in Victoria Davis, Tristan Narraway and Jessie Godfrey.“This will be no easy task for the younger girls given Arnold’s fitness but a strong effort by any one of the three could put a challenge on Arnold which she has not had to fight in the series this year,” added Dunne.Racing begins at 9pm and non-championship races will also be held for the younger categories.Registration is open until Friday and forms are to be dropped off at either Winners Edge or Bicycle Works.
