Cheer on our cyclists, urges BBA chief

Dominque Mayho (right) will be cycling for Bermuda in next week's Island Games.

Cycling enthusiasts will get more than their fair share of action when the Island Games begin.Road racers will take to the streets early on Sunday morning and the mountain bikers will take centre stage a day later. The road race circuit will see the men ride 110 kilometres and the women 50 kilometres. It will consist of a loop from Frog Lane, Middle Road to Flatts, North Shore Road to Barkers Hill roundabout, Palmetto Road and back along Frog Lane. The men’s division will feature 35 riders from 11 islands who will do 11 laps of the course. Twelve riders from six islands will compete in the women’s category and will race seven laps of the 10 kilometre course.“We would encourage the public to come out and watch this exciting event and to cheer on our local athletes,” said Bermuda Bicycle Association (BBA) President Peter Dunne.“Team Bermuda has one great advantage, the enthusiasm of the local spectators, and we are hoping that locals will turn out to encourage our riders to a great result.“Nicole Mitchell will probably have a shot at medalling and as a team the women should be contenders in either the road race team or time trial.“In the men's events I think we’re going to look to Geri Mewett in the criterium and Dominique Mayho in the road race.“The time trial will be interesting as the word is that all five of the riders from Isle of Man are consistently riding faster than our guys, but the weather here is just a little different from the Irish Sea.”Following the road race, the time trial will take place next Tuesday at 9.30am at Clearwater Beach in St David’s.The distance for the men is 42.25 kilometres, and the women will ride 33.8 kilometres. The road criterium concludes the road cycling on Thursday evening, with junior cyclists riding for ten minutes along the streets of Hamilton.Thirty minutes plus five laps has been sanctioned for the women, while the men will ride 50 minutes and five laps.Racing begins at 6.30pm for the women and 7.20pm for the men.Mountain biking will begin on Monday with a criterium at the Arboretum. The women will set out first at 5.15pm, while the men start at 6.30pm.The cross-country competition takes place at Ferry Reach, with the women competing for 75 to 90 minutes on the course. The men will follow shortly after for 100 to 120 minutes on the same course.“They (mountain bikers) all know that this will be the toughest races of their careers so far and they have made the commitment to be at their peak fitness come the races.“So with perfect conditions we can hope that they can deliver strong results and demonstrate that they can be competitive at this level.”In order to ensure the safety of the competitors, Bermuda Police and Works and Engineering have agreed to close the roads on Sunday in the direction of the race from 7.45am until 11.30am that morning.Frog Lane, between Palmetto Road and Parsons Road will be closed in both directions.“We recognise that this may be an inconvenience to members of our community and for this we apologise in advance.“This may add a few minutes to your usual time but the warm and friendly spirit of Bermuda will certainly understand the need for this interruption.”Bermuda’s cycling teamMen: Dominique Mayho, Geri Mewett, Shannon Lawrence, Johan Vivier and Darren GlasfordWomen: Nicole Mitchell, Karen Bordage and Earlena InghamBermuda’s mountain biking teamMark Hatherly, Chequan Richardson, Deshi Smith, Brian Steinhoff, Phil Trussell
