Mayho braced for tough final race
Dominique Mayho admits he will have his hands full in the mountain biking endurance race at Ferry Reach Park this weekend.
Mayho, the Male A division champion, has won every race he has competed in this season, and missed two that were claimed by series runner-up Mark Hatherly.
Downplaying his chances of winning the four-hour event on Sunday, Mayho believes that several riders are capable of giving him a run for his money.
“I honestly feel Mark Hatherley is the favourite for Sunday because he’s been riding really strong all season,” Mayho said. “He’s probably the fittest he’s been for a while right now.
“Also add to the equation that he’s been coming second to me and winning when I’m not there. He’s way stronger than the rest of the competitors.”
Although the mountain biking season finishes on Sunday, Mayho’s schedule only heats up when the road racing circuit comes into full swing immediately afterwards.
“It feels great to be the series champion because it’s a long season and every race you have to bring your A game,” Mayho said.
“The main difference is mountain biking is more of an individual sport because you can’t really draft another rider.
“Road racing there is team tactics and you have to constantly think about what the other riders are going to do.
“The mountain biking is helping with my time trialling a lot. I’d rather do my training in a mountain bike race than on my own on the road.”
Sunday’s race begins at 8.30am.
