Crash ruins Mayho’s chances in Arizona
Dominique Mayho, Bermuda’s top male cyclist, had to cut his weekend short after being involved in a crash at the Tucson Classic in Arizona at the weekend.
Mayho, competing in the men’s professional division, wrecked his bike on day two of the three-day event in a high speed downhill collision and had to withdraw from the race.
The former Young Male Athlete of the Year was sent flying over the handlebars of his bike after careering into the rider in front.
“I was involved in a high-speed crash downhill which pretty much wrecked my bike,” Mayho said. “I have a lot of road rash but nothing too serious. I will be back to training Tuesday morning once I get home.”
Although the crash put paid to his involvement, he was satisfied with his time-trial over a 3.2-mile course on the opening day. His time of 7min 56.5sec was good enough for 60th place out of the 89 riders.
“Most people had time-trial bikes and I only had my road bike, so I’m pleased with the first day,” Mayho said.
“My time was faster then I was aiming for so that was pleasing as well.”
The Island’s top female cyclist, Nicole Mitchell, also competed at the event and performed well over the three days.
She finished 30th in Friday’s time-trial in 10:36, before coming 28th in the road race in 2hr 53min 46sec on Saturday.
Mitchell saved her best performance for last when she finished 21st in the circuit race, crossing the tape in 1:51:12, for a total time of 4:55:34.
