Matthew Oliveira finished fourth in the junior general classification of the Green Mountain Stage Race in Warren, Vermont, over the weekend.

The Bermudian had stage finishes of fourth, second, ninth and ninth and was second in the sprint.

Oliveira had a strong weekend of racing and also wore the leader’s jersey on the third day of four thanks to his second-place finish in the second stage.

The Bermuda team also contained Dominique Mayho, Zoenique Williams, Che’quan Richardson and Darren Glasford, along with juniors Kaden Hopkins and Alyssa Rowse.

Mayho, competing in the Pro 1 category with 80 competitors, had his best result in Monday’s criterium in Burlington, winning four mid-race sprints and earning some cash to go along with his fifth-place finish. Mayho was also sixth in stage two on his way to 27th overall.

Hopkins finished fifth on the opening junior time-trial, before coming sixth on the punishing 65-mile road race which finished at the top of Appalachian Gap in pouring rain and temperatures in the low 40s. Hopkins’s final GC position was thirteenth out of 91 starters.

Rowse raced in the top level Pro 1/2/3 category, which included Tara Whitten, who won a bronze medal in the team pursuit with Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, in the field. Rowse finished 20th out of 39 starters.

Williams was forced to withdraw on the second stage for health reasons.

In the category 3 group, Richardson and Glasford had two different versions of a tough weekend.

Richardson withdrew from Sunday’s road race, owing to the cold temperatures, but had turned in a strong race the day before, finishing 25th in a field of 67. Glasford was able to make it through the weekend, finishing 53rd.

Also racing was Cassy McPhee, who crashed out of the women’s 3/4 category race on Sunday, but had raced hard the day before, beating her group of chasers for 27th place.

“Next up for our trio of juniors [Oliveira, Hopkins and Rowse] is the UCI Road Race World Championships in Bergen, Norway, this month,” Peter Dunne, the president of the Bermuda Bicycle Association, said. “While the Green Mountain event was originally intended to cap a busy year, their performances both domestically and internationally have warranted their selection for Bergen, where they will compete against the best 17 and 18-year-old road cyclists in the world.”
