Excitement building ahead of road race season opener
Peter Dunne, the Bermuda Bicycle Association president, is looking forward to tomorrow’s road race season opening BRCC Individual Time Trial with great anticipation and excitement.
This year’s road race season was due to commence with the VT Construction Time-Trial last weekend at Kindley Field Road, but was postponed because of rain and rescheduled for May 30.
“It appears that Mother Nature might be on our side this week, so we’re excited,” Dunne said. “We are good to go and it should be a good time.”
The event will feature male and female riders in all seven categories who will compete over two separate courses starting from Clearwater Bay Car Park at Southside, St David’s and finishing at St David’s Lighthouse.
Riders 15 and older will do two laps on a 20 mile course and riders 14 and under one lap on a shorter 2.4 mile course.
The first rider is scheduled to set off at 7am with subsequent riders setting off thereafter at one minute intervals. Riders 14 and under will be allocated start times after the 15 and older riders.
The categories include Masters (40 and over), Open (19 to 39), Junior (17 to 18), Junior (15 to 16), Youth (13 to 14), Youth (11 to 12) and Youth (ten and under).
“I’m very confident we’ll have an event with a good turnout, as well as a youth event on a short course,” Dunne added. “People are very excited about it. Races are going to be coming fast and furious.”
Covid-19 regulations have been implemented to ensure the health and safety of all participants. Masks are required which participants may remove once lined up.
Riders will be socially distanced at the start and have been urged to depart immediately after completing the course.
“We just want get things rolling and have an event in a safe environment,” Dunne said.
