Road race bronze for Nicholas Narraway in Guadeloupe

Nicholas Narraway won a bronze medal for Bermuda in the cycling road race at the inaugural Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe. Christopher Morales of Puerto Rico, centre, and Rahael Lautone of Guadeloupe, left, won the gold and silver.

Bermuda closed out the inaugural Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe yesterday by claiming a bronze medal in the men’s cycling road race where Nicholas Narraway placed third.

Narraway shared the podium with race winner Christopher Morales, of Puerto Rico, and Raphael Lautone, of Guadeloupe, who finished second in the 120-kilometre event.

Narraway competed in the race with Bermuda team-mates Alexander Miller and Liam Flannery, with the former eventually powering away from the peloton to chase down the lead four riders from Puerto Rico, Cuba and Guadeloupe.

Coming into the finish it was a sprint for second between Narraway and Lautone who produced that something extra at home as he edged out the Bermudian to claim the silver medal.

Flannery and Narraway were fourth and fifth respectively in the individual time-trial while long jumper Mikal Dill finished sixth in his event on Friday.

Bermuda’s team of five athletes turned in strong individual performances on the weekend as runner Ryan Outerbridge set a personal best of 3min 59sec in the 1,500 metres, earning him a strong fourth place as Bermuda narrowly missed out on another medal.

The team is heading home today, having had the honour of being a part of the first Caribbean Games.

The host country for the next Games, which will be held in 2025, is expected to be announced in November.
