Sinclair Packwood Memorial race to go ahead despite fears over marshal numbers
Peter Dunne, president of the Bermuda Bicycle Association, has quashed concerns that this year’s Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race is under threat of being cancelled.
As a result of a shortage of marshals, major doubts had been cast over the 36th edition of the prestigious road race, which runs as a part of the Bermuda Day holiday celebration and has been the standout event on the Bermuda Bicycle Association’s calendar since its inception in 1987.
In a newsletter sent out to BBA members, organisers highlighted the issue, with volunteers desperately needed to fill the positions of both marshal co-ordinators and marshals.
“We are facing a critical situation that could lead to the cancellation of the upcoming Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race, our most prestigious and fastest road race on the calendar,” the newsletter read.
“We urgently need to fill all 56 volunteer marshal positions within the next week to ensure the race can proceed.
“It would be truly disappointing to have to cancel this race due to a shortage of volunteers. We cannot afford to wait until the last minute, so we appeal to each of you to step up and volunteer just an hour of your time.
“If you're participating in the race, consider if someone supporting you could help at a marshal’s post. The presence of marshals is crucial for the safety and success of the race.
“Time is of the essence, and your support is vital. Let's come together and make the Bermuda Road Race an unforgettable experience for all.”
However, Dunne, who will once again take up the role of race director, has moved to ease any lingering fears.
“It’s always a challenge and a bit of a struggle to get people to come forward to marshal but the race will definitely be going ahead,” he said.
“It can be complicated to get the required numbers because of the nature of positioning people in certain areas of the course, but as always we’ll get it done.
“I’m looking forward to what should be a good day, which is always exciting because of the all of the spectators along the course who make such a great atmosphere.”
