Caitlin Conyers sets sights on completing national clean sweep
Caitlin Conyers is determined to conclude the domestic season by completing a sweep of national titles.
The 32-year-old has been in the form of her life this year, making her mark both overseas and on island, including clinching both the national road race and time-trial top honours this month.
Conyers has now set her sights on the final national title with victory in the Criterium Championships, which takes place in St David’s on Sunday.
“Winning the third and final national title is definitely the aim,” said Conyers.
“I don’t believe I’ve ever managed to win all three national races before and so to be able to do that for the first time would be very cool.
“These races are huge for all of us and are really significant for those riding in overseas teams because you get to wear a special jersey with the Bermuda flag on it and you get called out as a champion in some of the races.
“Every time I race in a national championship it’s still massively exciting and I just love racing in Bermuda. It will always be my favourite place to ride.”
As well as being able to savour success, Conyers can also reflected on the opportunity to cement a local racing legacy.
“Being a national champion is something that can’t be taken away from you. Your name will always be in the record books and that’s something I feel is amazing to be able to have,” she added. “It’s quite nice to think that even in 20 or 30 years’ time I can look back, see my name and smile.”
As one of the dominant forces on island in recent years, Conyers will once again be among the firm favourites to triumph among the Open Female Division.
However, to complete the title treble she will have to dethrone defending champion Gabriella Arnold, who will be hopeful of retaining her crown.
“There is definitely extra pressure when people look at you as one of the favourites in these races,” added Conyers, who is relishing the opportunity to come up against criterium specialist Arnold.
“You want to show people that all of the full-time training is paying off and justify it.
“Gabby is the defending champion and I hope she is able to race. She rides as part of criterium team in the United States [LA Sweat] and so that should make the race more interesting.
“Obviously, I’d love to win but it’s always great to have as many riders as possible in a criterium because it just makes it so much more dynamic and exciting.
“The female riders on island are definitely getting stronger and so it could be a really interesting race. I’m sure it will be really technical race and you definitely have to watch out for your lines, because anything can happen, it should be a great watch for people.”
Another rider, who has added incentive on Sunday is Conor White, with this the last opportunity for the 23-year-old to claim a national title this season after he was pipped to both time-trial and road race honours by Kaden Hopkins.
After finishing as runner-up to Nicholas Pilgrim in last year’s race, White, who rides for United States Domestic Elite Team Austin Aviators, is particularly keen to triumph this time around.
“Riding for a predominantly crit-focused team, this title would definitely be beneficial to me and it’s the one I really want,” he said.
“Last year, I won both the time-trial and road race national titles, but I never really got the chance to wear the Bermuda jersey in races because I didn’t compete in a lot of those races.
“Winning the this title would mean I would actually get to wear the flag on my team kit because crit racing is what we do, so that’s definitely a big goal for me.
“It’s definitely an added incentive as is having missed out last year by such a small margin. That’s all part of racing, but hopefully I’m on the right side of the results this year. I’m ready for it and hopefully I can take that title.”
