Bermuda pair enjoy strong showing in Green Mountain Stage Race
Bermuda cyclists Nicholas Narraway and Conor White produced strong performances to claim top-20 finishes in the Green Mountain Stage Race Series in Canada.
Both riders were competing among the Pro Men’s 1/2 Division across four challenging days of racing in the heart of the Green Mountains of Vermont, consisting of a 5.7-mile time-trial opening stage, a 111-mile circuit race, a 90-mile road race and a 25-mile criterium closing stage.
It proved a particularly strong outing for Narraway who finished eleventh overall in the general classification on the back a consistent set of results, which included a sixth-place finish in the first race followed by three successive top-20 results in the remaining events.
Narraway’s combined total time of 8hrs 58min 56sec, saw him finish a highly respectable 2min 31sec adrift of overall winner Owen Wright, of the United States.
White endured mixed fortunes across the event, including a disappointing 40th-place finish in stage three. However, he did seal two top-ten places with an impressive fourth in stage two and seventh in the criterium. He finished eighteenth in the overall general classification, slightly less than 4½ minutes adrift of Wright.
For White, who rides domestically for United States Elite Team Austin Aviators, the series offered a valuable opportunity to to gain some much needed road racing competition ahead of the Pan Am Games in Santiago, Chile in October.
“I’ve been doing a lot of criteriums and not as many road races so this was nice to be able to do some longer races again,” White said
“It was good to get that preparation in ahead of the Pan Am Games and build race fitness. It is essentially part of big training block for me ahead of the Games.”
